2/14/2017 President’s Report

    • DATE: February 14, 2017
    • TO: Policy Committee
    • FROM: Harry Hilton, UIUC AAUP Chapter President
    • RE: President’s Monthly Report to Policy Committee (1/18/17 – 2/14/17)
    1. Chancellor Jones and VP Wilson: The new chancellor and Provost Feser met with the Policy Committee on January 23, 2017, at 11 am. Bill Williamson prepared the agenda of the meeting, which was very cordial, constructive and fruitful. I am working with Barbara Wilson to arrange for a date for her visit with the PC.
    2. Tenure workshop: The associate provost has agreed to participate in the workshop on April 20, 2017, 3:30 – 5 pm, 314 A IU. When the new provost comes aboard next week, I will send him an invitation. I also am arranging for two more panelists.
    3. Statute revisions: The revisions have been approved by the three senates and the Senate Council. They were transmitted to the president on December 5, 2016. I have asked the president’s office to notify me when they are sent to BoT. Next BoT meetings
      • March 15, 2017 Urbana
      • May 11, 2017 Springfield
      • July 12-13 2017 Chicago
      • I have been assured of the notification prior to transmittal.
    4. Legislative attacks on tenure and course content: Bob Parker continues to track news items on this important subject. We may wish to consider these topics for a workshop or for the May annual membership meeting. See
    5. Shared governance questionnaire: The questionnaire prepared by our Shared Governance Ad-Hoc Committee has been sent to the Provost who in turn sent it to SEC. A meeting with Gay Miller, SEC chair and our ad-hoc committee took place on January 23, 2017. Gay agreed to present it to the Senate as only an information item to avoid further delays. Associate Provost after further negotiations agreed to have the survey of unit heads completed this May well ahead of the meeting date of Committee A that will act on our censure removal.
    6. Meeting with Shawn Gilmore, president NTFC Local #6546 (UIUC non-tenure track faculty): David, John and I met with Shawn on Feb 8, and had a good discussion of mutual interests. Shawn shared the attached unsigned undated document with us. I inquired at the national office about its status and was assured that it is operative and that UIUC could have two separate AAUP chapters. Personally I believe that it would be counter productive to local AAUP interests and additionally lead to large amounts of confusion on and off campus. By having both the bargaining units and the legacy chapter (us) the separate functions and purposes are clearly delineated. Having an additional bargaining unit chapter on campus would make both chapters considerably less effective. In this case 1 + 1 would equal considerably less than 2. PC should discuss this matter as well as asking union members to join our chapter.
