5/2/24 Policy Committee Minutes

    Present: Hadi Esfahani, Robin Kar, Richard Laugesen, Robert Parker, Leslie Struble, H. F. Williamson

    The meeting began at about 12:34 p.m. with Kar presiding.

    1. Introduction. Kar called the meeting to order and welcomed the attendees.
    2. Review of the minutes for April 4, 2024, Meeting of Policy Committee. Since there were no responses to his request for comments on the minutes, Kar announced that they were approved by unanimous consent
    3. President’s Report. Kar noted that the key elements of his report concerning the review of the Promotion and Tenure Workshop and the planning for the Annual Chapter Meeting will be discussed later in the meeting.
    4. Review of the Promotion and Tenure Workshop, Thursday, April 25, 2024. There was agreement that the Workshop had gone well. Kar has thanked each of the panelists for their participation. There was discussion of how the results could be further publicized and used as part of a membership campaign.
    5. Planning for Annual Chapter Meeting: Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 3:30 PM.
      1. Program. Kar reported that the program will be a panel discussion on “Artificial Intelligence and Academic Freedom” presented by Professor Kevin Scharp (Philosophy) and himself. They will discuss current challenges and opportunities for Academic Freedom brought on by Artificial Intelligence.
      2. Report from Nominating Committee. The candidates for officers for the 2024-2025 academic year will be: President: Robin Kar; Vice President: Carol Symes; Co-secretaries: Richard Laugesen and H. F. Williamson; and Treasurer: H. F. Williamson.
      3. Publicity: There was a discussion of how the meeting could be publicized through E-Week and email to Chapter members.
    6. Reports and Other Actions. There being no further reports at this time, Kar adjourned the meeting at about 1:20 pm.

    As noted above, the Annual Meeting will be at 3:30 p.m. on May 7, 2024.
