Tenure workshop: The following have agreed to participate in the workshop on April 20, 2017, 3:30 – 5 pm, 314 A IU: Provost John Wilkin, Abbas Benmamoun, Terry Ostler (chair CAFT), John Prussing. Waiting on Craig Koslofsky (FAC)
Statute revisions: The revisions have been approved by the three senates and the Senate Council. They were transmitted to the president on December 5, 2016. I have asked the president’s office to notify me when they are sent to BoT. Next BoT meetings:
March 15, 2017 Urbana
May 11, 2017 Springfield
July 12-13 2017 Chicago
I have been assured of the notification prior to transmittal. As far I know nothing has been transmitted to BoT for their 3/15/17 meeting.
Legislative attacks on tenure and course content: Bob Parker continues to track news items on this important subject. We may wish to consider these topics for a workshop or for the May annual membership meeting. See
Shared governance questionnaire: I have asked Abbas about the disposition of the questionnaire prepared by our Shared Governance Ad-Hoc Committee. Abbas has indicated that the questionnaire will be ready for distribution after next week.
Meeting with Shawn Gilmore, president NTFC Local #6546 (UIUC non-tenure track faculty): David O’Brien, Bill Williamson, John Prussing and I met with Shawn on Feb 22 and Mar 7 and had good discussions on topics of mutual interest topics. The national AAUP office has indicated that UIUC could have two separate AAUP chapters. The NTFC members appear eager to form their own chapter. We have agreed that our chapter will concern itself with advocacy matters pertaining to academic freedom, shared governance, protection of all academics, etc. The NTFC chapter will deal with collective bargaining issues.
NTFC/AAUP member addition to PC: Shawn has recommended Dan Steward (visiting assistant professor of sociology) for PC membership. I seek PC approval of this addition.
AAUP committee visit: Professor Mark Criley (Illinois Wesleyan University) will visit UIUC on April 7. I will have a prepared statement for PC approval by the end of this month.
