4/11/19 Policy Committee Minutes

    Present:  Bettina Francis, Richard Laugesen, Walter McMahon, John Prussing, Bruce Rosenstock, H. F. Williamson

    The meeting began at about 12:29 p.m. with Laugesen presiding.

    1. Review of the Minutes for March 14, 2019 Meeting of Policy Committee.  The minutes were approved after minor revisions in two individual’s names.
    2. Review of schedule of remaining meetings for spring semester.  The schedule for the rest of the spring given the postponement of the meeting with Chancellor Jones will be:
      1. Regular Meetings of Policy Committee:
        12:30 p.m.:  May 2 in 217 Illini Union
      2. Special Meeting for voting members of the Policy Committee with Chancellor Jones:  11. a.m., Thursday, May 2, 2019, 217 Illini Union
      3. Annual Meeting:  3:00 p.m., Thursday, April 25, 2019: 314A Illini Union
    3. Proposed Schedule of Fall Meetings:  Williamson noted that if we continue to meet at 12:30 p.m. on an early Thursday in the month, the proposed schedule for next fall would be as shown below.  This will be reviewed and voted upon at the May meeting of the Policy Committee:
      • Thursday, September 5 (1st Thursday); instruction begins August 27 and Labor Day is Sept. 2.
      • Thursday, October 3 (1st Thursday);
      • Thursday, November 7 (1st Thursday).
      • Thursday, December 12 (2nd Thursday); Reading Day is also December 12
    4. Preparation for Meeting with Chancellor Jones on May 2, 2019.  The draft agenda was reviewed again with no changes recommended.  The final agenda will be prepared once the names of those planning to attend are known.
    5. Review of Promotion and Tenure Workshop on March 26, 2019.  Prussing reported that he felt the meeting went well and that there was a good turnout.  He thanked Laugesen for chairing meeting so effectively.
    6. Preparation for Annual Meeting
      1. Date:  The Annual Meeting will be at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 in 314A Illini Union
      2. Review of Program.  A draft of the printed program was part of the packet.
      3. Publicity.  Rosenstock agreed to help draft material as part of the program to publicize the meeting.  Williamson will circulate the program to the Chapter members and work with the Provost’s office to see if his staff can help as well.  Rosenstock, Prussing, and Williamson will work on the first part of the program.
    7. Reports
      1. Report from our Liaison to the NTFC Local #6546 Chapter.  Laugesen noted that the Chapter is in negotiations over its contract.  He agreed to contact Steward to see if he could provide information on what is involved particularly if there are issues related to AAUP interests in shared governance and academic freedom.
      2. Academic Freedom and Tenure.  Prussing noted that the individuals who had contacted him for assistance had been referred to the Faculty Advisory Committee as the next step.

    There were no other reports so the meeting adjourned at about 1:10 p.m.  As noted above, the final meeting of the semester will be on Thursday, May 2, 2019 in 217 Illini Union following the earlier meeting with Chancellor Jones.  The Annual Meeting is at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 in 314A Illini Union
